Why Do Urinals and Boys’ Toilets Become Smelly?

It’s as simple as that. It’s the same reaction and smell as when a compost heap goes off and becomes Anaerobic.

Is There an Easy Solution? Yes

No Flush BioClean together with No Flush BioSleeves and/or NoFlush BioMates reverses the anaerobic process. They create an aerobic reaction. The uric acid and urine specific micro bacteria contained in these products reverses the reaction by eating the uric acid and urine and converting these into oxygen, water, nitrogen and carbon. The process is known as bio-remediation.  It is totally safe and environmentally friendly.

Why Boy’s Toilet Floors Smell

Boys toilets can become smelly for a number of reasons the most common one has very little to do with the urinal itself.  Generally it is due to spillage and subsequent walk tracks from the urinal to basin or urinal to door and incorrect cleaning methods.

Untreated urine soaks into tile grout and concrete floors and then dries and crystallises into uric acid. It then anaerobically breaks down giving off the well know boys’ toilet smell.  Yes, it is the same reaction and smell as when your compost heap goes off.

Using No Flush BioClean together with No Flush BioSleeves and/or NoFlush BioBlocks reverses the process. The uric acid specific micro bacteria contained in these products reverses the reaction by eating the uric acid and urine and converting these in oxygen, nitrogen and carbon. The process is known as bio-remediation.

Conventional cleaning agents do not remediate the uric acid, soaked in urine or urine spills, they just kill aerobic bacteria present and then temporarily mask the problem with an odouriser for a few hours. Come the morning the smell is back again.

Problem with Conventional Cleaning Products and Methods

Conventional cleaning products and methods do not remove (remediate) the uric acid, soaked in urine or urine spills. They just wash the surface and in the process kill the aerobic bacteria and about half the anaerobic bacteria present then temporarily mask the problem with an odouriser (perfume) for a few hours. Come the morning the decomposing urine smell is back again. Complaints are back.

Commercial grade disinfectants and cleaners containing chlorine compounds, phosphoric acids and other acid based compounds commonly used in schools and businesses for urinal and toilet floor cleaning do not fix smelly urinals.

We know this, your cleaners’ know this, your staff know this and your nose knows this.

NoFlush Urinal Systems Are Easy To install

The first and overriding criteria when developing and designing the NoFlush Urinal Systems was ease of installation and retrofitting to existing urinals. The second design criterion was a set and forget requirement.

No Flush Urinal Systems mechanical components are:

NoFlush Biological Consumable Components

The biological or consumable components are:

The combination of the NoFlush BioSleeve, NoFlush BioClean and water create the environment that allows the 9 bacteria strains to create enzymes that breakdown and consume the urine, uric acid and associated products creating the Biological Bio-remediation process which eliminates urinal and toilet floor odours and smells.

Easy to Use and Maintain

NoFlush Urinal Systems are specifically designed to be easy to use and maintain.  We recognise that cleaners and maintenance staff responsible for toilets and urinals have many duties and are frequently pushed for time.

The Water Management System Timer is programmed and set by the installation plumber. Once set the AC timers continue indefinitely. DC timers require battery replacement generally 6 or 12 months depending on battery type installed.

The NoFlush BioSleeve is replaced every 3 months this can be undertaken by cleaner or maintenance person.

Urinal is cleaned and sprayed daily with NoFlush BioClean ( 1: 10 dilution) and NoFlush BioClean ( 1: 20 dilution) is used to clean and mop the toilet floor daily.

There is no need to use any other cleaner for these functions.  Chemical cleaners containing chlorine and or phosphoric acid compounds cannot be used with the NoFlush biological cleaner as they kill the aerobic bacteria it contains and create an anaerobic environment that produces the smelly urinal and toilet floor odours the NoFlush Urinal System eliminates.

Biological Stain and Odour Removal

It is commonly referred to as Biological Bio-remediation or Bacterial digestion

Biological stain and odour removal use micro-organisms ( bacteria and enzymes ) to breakdown, digest and eat organic waste and spills such as urine, baby soiling, pet soiling,  dairy products, blood, vomit, fruit juices, fats, cooking oils, wine and most soft drinks.

The process of breaking down the waste or spillage removes stains & odours caused by the waste or spillage.

The bacteria and enzymes can be formulated to be waste specific or general and are contained in products known as Biological Stain and Odour Removers or Biological Cleaners or Bio Cleaners.

What is Bio-remediation or Bacterial Digestion?

Bio-remediation or bacterial digestion is the process of micro- organisms such as bacteria and enzymes they produce digesting, breaking down and consuming organic matter which is a waste product.

The bacteria feed on the organic waste, deriving nutrition for growth and reproduction. Using complex chemical reaction, the organic waste is metabolized down to water and carbon dioxide, providing the bacteria with energy to sustain their life.

The end result of this process is that the organic waste is digested   (eaten up)   and is no longer present to produce odour, unsightly soiling or stains.

Biological Stain and Odour Removers (Biological Cleaners)

Biological Stain and Odour Removers are natural, safe, non toxic and good for the environment. Applied correctly they produce extraordinary results and high level of customer satisfaction.

They can be formulated specifically or generally to dispose of wastes products and soils safely, economically and rapidly.

They should contain the necessary quality and quantity of selective and specific bacteria, specific enzyme systems and microbial nutrients to attack and consume the waste product they are designed to remove.

Well designed Biological cleaners work quickly and efficiently to digest chemical and organic waste with no odour or noxious gas being released.

These bacteria and enzymes break apart the waste and the bacteria itself converts this waste into two basic compounds: carbon dioxide and water.

What is an enzyme and how does it aid in digestion by the Bacteria?

An enzyme is a chemical catalyst that breaks up long, complex waste molecules into smaller, simpler pieces. The smaller, broken up pieces can then be digested directly by the bacteria.

Enzymes are not living things. They cannot grow or reproduce themselves. They are chemicals that are manufactured and used by bacteria in order to digest waste. When added to the organic waste, enzymes immediately go to work breaking down the waste. The bacteria are then able to consume these fragments immediately, so they now have a plentiful supply of prepared food waiting for them. The growing bacteria then start to reproduce and generate their own enzymes, keeping the cycle going.

A microorganism’s genetic code is like a computer program which allows it to produce enzymes. These microorganisms are capable of determining what organic soils are present in an environment.  If their computer program allows, they can produce specific enzymes to break down those organics. It is important to have quality microorganisms with codes for a wide range of capabilities.

Products with the right microorganism can degrade materials that cause soils to adhere making surfactants more effective in removing them. Once surfactants have done their work and

the surface is wiped/mopped the residual microorganisms remain to provide deep, residual cleaning as long as conditions such as moisture and food source allow them to be active.

Why Use Biological and Bio-enzymatic Removers & Cleaners

There are four main reasons for using Biological Cleaners and Odour Remover products:

Biological Cleaners are safer for the environment and safer for human health than traditional chemical cleaners and odour control products

Biological Cleaners use highly specialized enzyme producing microorganisms to clean and control odours by eliminating the soils that traditional chemical products alone cannot treat.

Biological Cleaners provide residual cleaning up to 80 hours after application

Biological Cleaners help to displace unknown, potentially “pathogenic” (disease causing) bacteria with known, healthy microorganisms and in this way contribute to better human health

  • Helps prevent blockages and keeps pipe work
  • Reduces water usage signific
  • Improves overall urinal hygiene.
  • Reduces water use, deodorising and maintenance costs.
Q: Why does the Boys’ Toilet Floor Smell ?

ANS:  Boys’ Toilet floor smells develop foul urinal like odours and smells are caused by tracking of dribbled urine from the urinal step up areas on shoe soles from the urinal to the vanity basin, from the urinal to the exit door and from the vanity basin to the exit door.

As these urine deposits dry they become anaerobic causing foul odours and smells which permeate many male toilets.

Daily cleaning and mopping the toilet floors with NoFlush BioClean (1 : 20 Dilution) will eradicate this problem and eliminates the foul odours and smells permanently.

NoFlush BioClean can be used for all toilet floor areas.

Q. How do I know when to replace the NoFlush BioSleeve?

ANS.  The BioSleeve will need replacing on average every 3 months. Urinals with more than one cistern may require more frequent replacement. Check the amount of biological (blue/green) material remaining in the BioSleeve by lifting the BioSleeve out of the waste outlet adaptor and checking the material under the cap.

Q: Why is there a smell coming from the urinal outlet?

ANS:

  • The BioSleeve may have expired. Remove the BioSleeve from the outlet and check the level of biological material remaining and replace if necessary . High use areas may require that the BioSleeve be replaced more frequently than the average 3 months. It is recommended that the BioSleeves be checked at least monthly intervals to ensure adequate “good” bacterial population.
  • Good and effective bacteria may have been killed by use of products that contain bleach or other harsh chemicals. Refrain from using cleaning products other than the recommended No Flush BioClean concentrate at the nominate dilution.
  • Flushing may be occurring too often affecting the amount of good bacteria that break down the uric acid. Reset the timer so that flushing occurs on a  4-6 hourly basis.

Daily Cleaning instructions may not be followed correctly.  Ensure that cleaning staff are well versed in the cleaning procedure .

Q: Why is the urinal not flushing?

ANS:

  • The timer is only set to open the solenoid valve every 4-6 hours to maintain the good bacteria.
  • Timer may need resetting or require replacement.
Q: The solenoid does not close and water is running continuously?
  • Debris from the pipes may have lodged in the solenoid valve. Ensure that a filter screen is fitted in the M&F valve prior to connection.
  • The solenoid valve may be worn and require replacement.
  • Turn off water supply stop cock to stop water running
  • Arrange for solenoid to be replaced. Call 1300 NoFlush or Email: wes@water.net.au
